Hi I’m Urban Sundvall and I’d like to welcome you to the second episode in the “Inspired Daily Series”.
These episodes are be in small ‘bite sized’ pieces so you can easily chew them over in your mind, to work out what the meaning is and How large the value, of apply it In Your life, is for You. Today is a great day so let yourself take the short few minutes this episode takes, to relax and gain value with some real inspiration, as well as the understanding of the ‘behind the scenes’ functions, that this life story relates to. It is also about the practicalities we can all learn to apply in every area of our lives. Barbara Arrowsmith Young is the inspiring woman I mentioned In the last episode. She is someone who had a confusing assortment of serious learning disabilities to cope with. Although in the era she grew up in, in the 1950s that term of “learning disabilities” would not be used for another two decades, so there were no visits to medical specialists or psychologists and certainly no special-ed teachers to help her. Another part of the confounding problem was that the serious difficulties she had, she also had some areas of brilliance, such as an amazing memory. Barbara understood nothing in real time and would have to replay conversations over and over, in her head, up to twenty times, to make sense of it. By the time she got to the end of a sentence, she could not recall what the beginning of it meant. An area of the brain called Broca’s area was not working properly so she had great difficulties pronouncing words. What’s known as Spatial Reasoning that we mostly take for granted, was a lacking capacity for Barbara which meant that she had an inability to construct the necessary mental image of the pathway to get from here to the other side of the room that the rest of us do without even realising it. We also use this to enable ourselves to declutter a desk or get to where we left the car keys. She was always getting lost. What’s called Kinesthetic perception allows us to know where our body and arms and legs are in space to coordinate movement. Or to recognise by touch something in a bag or pocket. This also did not work for Barbara, nor did her sense of touch work very well on her left side. I could go on but I think you have some concept of her difficulties. This story does indeed thou have a real up side to it. Having to work harder than anyone to achieve some semblance of functionality in living and learning, was probably a great training ground to become the inspiration she is! By understanding the implication of a study conducted by Mark Rosenzweig, and I hope I have pronounced that right, which was one of the first studies to demonstrate Neuroplasticity (or adaptability) of the brain; made her excited. It made her realise she did not just have to compensate for her deficits, she decided to find ways to test if she could actually overcome them. By doing something scientists weren’t at that time, creating a breakthrough in combining the work of Mark Rosenzweig with that of Russian researcher and author Alexandr Luria. She created a series of mental exercises and she didn’t know if they would work, however they did extraordinarily well. I am cutting a long story short here and would encourage you to follow some of the links below to get full benefit of what she did and the implications for you and your life too. So the short of it is that Barbara Arrowsmith Young retrained her brain not just to be ‘normal’, to become extraordinary and now has not just one school to help children overcome ‘learning difficulties’ she has programs she designed operating all over the world including several here in Australia. She is a genuine inspiration because she has given us a tremendous example of the fact that it does not matter where you start from. What matters is the effort you are willing to put in to change your mind and Brain, your habits and your outcomes. To design and build better life. Spoiler alert, here comes the plug.
